Growing Your Blog: Why WordPress?

Have you heard the news?  This Friday, July 5, I will be making the move from Blogger to WordPress!

What does that mean for you?  Mostly just that I'll have a fun new design {don't worry, it won't be TOO different, and you'll still recognize the color scheme}.  Also, I won't be able to post any new content between Thursday night when the party goes live until I'm finished making design tweaks and ready to show the new site to the world!  You will still be able to find me at the same place, www.oneartsymama.com, and you can expect the same kinds of posts and projects you're used to.  So why am I switching?  Well, I'm glad you asked!

If you're a blogger who's been wondering about making the switch, or even just a reader who's interested, let me give you a quick overview of the three places/ways a gal can make a blog.

BLOGGER
- Totally free to create and run
- Hosted free by Blogger {Google}
- User-friendly and simple to edit
- You must comply with Blogger guidelines

WORDPRESS.COM
- Free to create and run unless you choose to upgrade to a paid template
- Hosted free by WordPress
- Has the option of adding plug-ins to further customize your site, help with SEO, and more
- You may NOT run ads or do sponsored posts on this platform

WORDPRESS.ORG
- Templates may be free or paid, depending on what you choose
- Self-hosted; you pay a company like GoDaddy, BlueHost, etc. for hosting services
- Fully customizable with plug-ins of all kinds
- You own your own content and may do as you like, as long as you comply with FTC guidelines
- Recommended by many blogging experts, and shows brands you are serious about blogging as a business

As you can see, there are advantages and disadvantages to each platform.  I don't think there's a single "right answer" or "one-size-fits-all" choice when it comes to deciding where and how to make your blog.  In my opinion, Blogger is probably the best option for hobbyists who are just getting started and are creating a blog as an outlet or something fun to do on the side.  If, on the other hand, you're serious about making your blog into a business and dedicating the time and effort it takes to grow a readership of several thousand followers, it's worth your time to go the WordPress.org route.  I've gone back and forth about making the switch for over a year now, and finally decided to close my eyes and jump!

Here are the major reasons why I decided to make the move.

1. I wanted to own my own content and not be at the whim of Google.  I personally know bloggers who have tried to log in to their Blogger sites one day and their accounts were locked because somehow Google flagged them as spam or in violation of a rule.  Most, if not all, of them eventually got their blogs back but not without a lot of hassle and anxiety.

2. I wanted the benefits of certain plug-ins.  I noticed some things my friends on WordPress were able to do with and for their blogs that weren't available to me...I was jealous, lol!

3. WordPress.org eliminates the need for a photo storage site.  Right now, I pay a subscription fee to Photobucket for hosting the pictures I use.  Once I make the switch, I can do that right on WordPress as part of my own hosting.

4. I can create guest users.  Now, I will be able to give folks who contribute to One Artsy Mama on a semi-regular basis, like Erin who posts her monthly Crafty Chaos projects, their own usernames and passwords.  This way, instead of sending me a typed document and a bazillion huge pictures that I'm supposed to format into a post, she can log in and create the post herself just like I would normally do. She'll have restricted access, so she can't go changing things around or deleting things {bahaha, sorry, Erin!}, but she can make any edits she wants to her own posts.  This is what I do when I guest post on sites like Somewhat Simple and Engaged Marriage, and it's so much easier!

5. The experts told me to.  Recently, I attended an online conference put on by The Blog Workshop and every speaker agreed that bloggers who wanted to make a great impression with brands and really make their blogs their jobs should be self-hosted.  I do know there are some "Big Bloggers" out there who are still on the Blogger platform, so obviously, you can still be successful there too, but I thought the benefits were worth the hassle of switching.

6. The initial investment is worth {in my opinion} the long-term returns.  Honestly, one of my big hang-ups about making the switch was the money.  Initially, I balked at the idea of a hosting fee {which ended up being way smaller than I anticipated}, paying someone to help me, and paying for a theme, but in the long run when I considered the money I'm bringing in and the increase in page views I expect, it's a wise business investment that wasn't even as expensive as I thought it would be.

Those are my reasons for packing up and moving this weekend.  Perhaps you're thinking it's not the right move for you...and if so, you're probably right!  But maybe you're intrigued and think this might be the next step for you and your blogging business.  If so, it's time to find and talk with someone who knows a lot about this and then hire someone you trust to help you with logistics.  I'm using Laura Summers {I can give you her info if you're interested}.  Unless you're a whiz with code, I really recommend getting help.  I thought about trying to do it on my own {and I do know a few people who did successfully move themselves}, but I don't have all the skills I need and I didn't want the responsibility.

I hope this helps to give you a better overview of your options and what might be best for you!  As for me, I'm anxiously waiting for Friday and I can't wait to unveil the "new and improved" One Artsy Mama!

Angry Birds Party

Hey, friends!  You know I love me a good party!  I especially enjoy planning the celebration for Little Crafter's birthday every year.  I actually have fun coordinating everything from the decorations and food down to the smallest details to go along with his chosen theme.  {Remember last year's Lego party?}  But it can take hours to come up with inspiration and to search Pinterest and other blogs for ideas!  That's why I was really excited when I found out that Birthday Express recently launched a Party Ideas site that's full of DIY decor, favor, and activity ideas as well as recipes!

The folks at Birthday Express asked me if I would like to share this Angry Birds party with all of you, and I jumped at the chance!  I think you'll love it as much as I do...although I doubt you'll love it quite as much as LC does!  He's obsessed with Angry Birds!

The Sound of Summer

Friends, you know that when I love something, I mean really love something, I pretty much can't stop talking about it.  Like Starbucks and Silhouette Cameos.  And I've recently added something else to my list. Tailor & Stylist.  It takes a lot to get on my short list, but they've done it!  So far, I've gotten three of their dresses, and I absolutely love them.  First, I got the High-Low Maxi, which I had fun styling five different ways.  Then, I got the Sweet Serendipity, which had a fabulous 50's retro chic flair.  My most recent aquisition is this Sound of Summer dress, and it has a totally different feel!

Shine on Fridays!

Hey there, friends!  This week's party really snuck up on me!  I can't believe we're already so close to the weekend!  Probably because I've been busy spending the week with seven absolutely adorable 4 and 5 year olds in Vacation Bible School!  Seriously, how cute and silly are they?  Love these guys...

Patriotic Decorations Inspired by All You

This post is part of a social shopper marketing insight campaign with Pollinate Media Group® and All You, but all my opinions are my own. #lifeforless #pmedia http://cmp.ly/3/8vNxcO

Where do you love to get inspiration?  You all know I love browsing Pinterest, Craftgawker, and other blogs, but I also get plenty of great ideas from magazines.  The most recent little project I whipped up was inspired by the July issue of All You magazine, which I picked up last Friday at Target.

Crafty Chaos With Erin: Painted Geometric Shapes

Hey, friends! Today, my bestie Erin is here for her monthly post and she's got a fun craft to share that helps little ones learn their shapes and colors while practicing fine motor skills...take a look!

**********************************************************************

Hello friends in One Artsy Mama land! I’m sure you’ve noticed by Amy’s facebook statuses that it’s hot, hot, hot here in MD, with lots of wonderful humidity. In other words, a lot of days for this pregnant mama to bask in the coolness of the air conditioning! It also means trying to find some things to do with two active little boys in an indoor setting. I’m going to give you two versions of this project. First, I’ll show you what we actually did, and the finished project, but keep reading, because then I’m going to show you the “Honestly” version!
Collin kept asking to paint, so I thought, “sure, why not”, grabbed some brushes, paint, and wax paper, and we were off!

Things you’ll need:
Paint
Brushes
Wax Paper
Painter’s Tape
Construction Paper
Scissors
Glue

Boho Beaded Bracelet

I don't know about you, friends, but my summer wardrobe consists of a variety of different colors.  I've got some coral, some yellow, lots of turquoise, some pink, various shades of blue, and even some black and white.  So, I decided to make myself a bracelet that would match just about anything so that I can grab it and go, knowing it will look great no matter what I'm wearing for the day.  In the end, it actually ended up being two bracelets that I can either wear individually or stacked.  Here's how I made them, and you can too!

Patriotic Washi Tape Coasters

Friends, I don't know about you, but the Artsy Family loves us a good holiday!  We like to be festive all year round, which means we often have decorative holiday touches around the house.  So, when I got some adorable patriotic washi tape last week, I immediately wanted to use it to create some 4th of July coasters!

Kiwi Crate: Summer Discovery Series

Ok, friends, how many of you have little people in your house who are home for the summer and already saying, "What should I do?  I'm bored!"  My Little Crafter is one of those kids who thrives when he has lots of fun hands-on activities to do all day long, but sometimes this Artsy Mama just runs out of ideas.  So, both of us were super-excited about this sample Kiwi Crate we received in the mail.  If you've never heard of Kiwi Crate before, here's a quick description of what they're all about:

Monster Craft and Monsters University!

How many of you have seen {and loved} the movie Monsters, Inc.?  I have to confess that hubby and I saw it when it first came out, way before there was a Little Crafter in the picture.  In fact, I searched online for the release date, and it was 2001, which made me feel kind of old...  Little Crafter has seen it too; he watched it at a friend's house a few months ago and thought the monsters were quite hilarious. {They are.}  So, all of us were pretty excited to hear that there's a sequel hitting theaters this summer, Monsters University!

Recently, as we were running errands at Walmart, Little Crafter got excited to see the monsters all over the store!  They were everywhere; on Band-Aids, Jell-o boxes, mac and cheese cups, Juicy Juice, t-shirts, and of course in the toy aisle! {If you want to see the full story of our shopping trip and feel like you were right there with us, hop on over and check out my G+ album!}

One Crafty Contest: The Winners!

Well, friends, this is it; we've officially come to the end of One Crafty Contest.  In one sense, I'm sorry it's over because I loved seeing all the creativity each contestant shared with us over the past five weeks.  But, in another sense, it will be nice to settle down a bit and get back to the normal business of crafting and posting...I have some fun projects up my sleeve to share with you in the coming weeks!  I want to say a giant THANK YOU to several groups of people before I share the results.

Styled by Tori Spelling Jewelry: Easy as 1-2-3!

Who loves jewelry?  You all know I sure do!  And even more fun than buying it is making it yourself!  I'm constantly getting comments from readers who are interested in making their own bling, but don't know where to start or are intimidated by the tools and techniques.  Honestly, it's not nearly as difficult as it seems. And today, I've got an extra-special treat for you, especially all the novices out there who have been afraid to try your hand at it...I'm going to show you a great way to start that requires NO tools and NO special skills.  It's literally as easy as 1-2-3.

Ready?

It's called the Styled by Tori Spelling jewelry line, and you can get it at exclusively at JoAnn Fabric and Craft Stores.  I recently got to sample a bunch of the pieces from Tori's new line {yes, I have the best job in the world!} and I couldn't believe how simple it was to create amazing statement pieces in thirty seconds or less.

Here's how it works.  We're going to start by making a necklace.
You need three pieces:
1. A chain
2. A necklace bottom
3. Connectors

Natural Look for Summer with Rimmel Makeup

Hey there, friends!  As most of you know, the Artsy Family recently took our annual vacation to Myrtle Beach!  One of the trickiest style problems I always have at the beach is getting the right makeup look.  I mean, layers of cosmetics and dark or super-bright colors just look strange when you're building sand castles and jumping in the waves, or even playing mini-golf around town.  But, I do like to look "put together" and to even out my skin tone while highlighting my natural features.  So, I decided to play around with the latest summer makeup trend and come up with a new natural look using a few Rimmel products I picked up at Walmart.

Happy Father's Day: A Photo Project

Happy Father's Day to all the dads out there who happen to read One Artsy Mama {all two of you!}.
Today is a special day to celebrate how important fathers are and what a special role they play in our lives.  I want to give a shout-out to my dad, the source of my sense of humor, my germaphobia, and my love of ice cream, and thank him for always giving the best advice in the world!  I love you, Dad!  I also want to give props to my hubby, who is an amazing father to Little Crafter day in and day out.  Dan, I truly hope that he grows up to be the same kind of honest, loving, man of integrity that you are!

You all know about the first gift I made for hubby {I also made the same thing for my dad using a different photo}, but today I wanted to show you the other project Little Crafter and I worked on together for him.

Meet the Top 3

Friends, believe it or not, we're down to the Top 3 in this year's season of One Crafty Contest!  Before we take a look at their burlap projects and then vote for the grand prize winner, I thought I'd let these three extremely talented ladies introduce themselves {and their blogs} to you.  So here they are: Brianna, Ilona, and Shannon!

Meet Brianna

I'm Brianna, a stay-at-home mom to two energetic little boys ages 17 months and 4, married to my best friend, and a lifetime lover of crafts. I am a right brained, lefty who can only think in colors or pictures. Creativity is just a part of me.

I'm a newbie blogger at CraftandRepeat, I am so glad I made the choice to blog. It combines some of my absolute favorite things: crafting, writing, and teaching. I am so thankful to be a part of this fun contest Amy has put together. Many thanks to her, the judges, the sponsors, all of her readers and voters, and all of the talented contestants for making it a true challenge! I entered this contest with no expectations. It was just something to try and do for fun. I couldn't be more excited about being in the top 3!

Sweet Serendipity Dress

How many of you love wearing dresses?  I have a few friends who absolutely hate dressing up, but as for me, I love looking and feeling girly just about all the time.  In the spring and summer especially, I'd rather wear a skirt or a dress than anything else, even if we're just running errands around town or heading to the library for story time.

A few months ago, I had the opportunity to introduce you to one of my favorite new sponsors and a great source for stylish dresses, tops, skirts, and accessories, Tailor & Stylist, by showing you how I styled their High-Low Maxi Dress five totally different ways.  I was incredibly excited when they offered to send me a second dress to review and share with you how I styled it.

The dress I chose is called the Sweet Serendipity, and it does live up to its name!

Treasures of the Ocean Jewelry Set

Hey, friends!  You know how much I love the beach, and as much as I thoroughly enjoyed our recent vacation, I'm kind of bummed that it's already over for this year.  So, when I saw these gorgeous green shell beads that remind me of the ocean, I thought I'd make myself a jewelry set that will make me think of my favorite place all summer long, even when I'm not there.

All About Me Book Giveaway

You all know I'm a total sucker for photo memory books.  And if you've been around here for awhile, you know that my favorite place to get them is Paper Coterie.  There are lots of places online where you can create gorgeous photo scrapbooks, but Paper Coterie offers some really unique books in their "Documenting" line that take it to the next level.  These books are designed for you {or sometimes your kiddos} to write information and memories inside, combining your treasured photos with the things you'll want to remember, captured in your own handwriting.

The first of these books I got is the Quotables one, which provides tons of spaces to write down the hilarious, sweet, or silly things your child{ren} might happen to say.  I literally use this all the time.  Little Crafter has no shortage of quotable moments, I assure you!  Then, for Mother's Day, I got the "All About Mom" book which allows Little Crafter to capture some things about our relationship and how he sees me.
